Atlantis: A legendary city.
Atlantis: A legendary city.
Atlantis is a mythological and truly famous city; it has fed people’s imagination over the time that there are films, stories, books, theories, debates, and more. It is possible to say that most people in the world have heard of it, and for centuries, others have tried to find it. However, all this is due to the fascinating mystery of its disappearance, added to the clues of its location, described by Plato, it is come to think that Atlantis may have existed.
Consequently, it´s said that the story of Atlantis was created as a symbolic representation that Platon made for Athens, including aspects of a utopian city with its fatal end by greed and arrogance, with the intention of leaving a moral. On the contrary, in the 19th century, Ignatius Donnelly presented a theory that tried to explain the story of the flood of Atlantis with the biblical story of Noah, replacing the Greek gods with the God Yahweh who punished humanity with a universal flood for being so evil; moreover, Donnelly was the one who made the most popular suggestion of the location of Atlantis by relating the columns of Hercules with the Strait of Gibraltar, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
Researchers and scholars have theorized various locations in which Atlantis may have existed; as well as in the Bahamas, Santorini, Athens, Egypt, Antarctica and even hints that such a civilization may have been the American continent subsequently discovered. In some of these places they have found objects and structures that could feed such theories; however, nothing is proven, those evidence could also be from other civilizations of which there is little or no record. In short, whether Atlantis is just a story created by Plato or a historical account of a place that in ancient times truly existed, that lost paradise will continue to inspire new generations and be part of humanity’s cultural legacy.
